This program is sending 6 lucky South Australian wine industry participants to other Great Wine Capitals to learn directly from international industry experts. They will prepare reports and blogs and share their learnings with the South Australian industry.

Program participants

Jana Hildebrandt, University of South Australian / Australian Wine Research Institute

Jana Hildebrandt is a PhD candidate undertaking research between the University of South Australia and the Australian Wine Research Institute. She will use the Great Wine Capitals Knowledge Exchange Bursary to travel to Bordeaux and collaborate with the Institut des Sciences de la Vigne et du Vin looking at the effect of vineyard and winery heating on overripe characters in red wine and grapes. This immersive research experience will provide a two-way knowledge transfer on changes to grape and wine composition and develop practical capabilities on dealing with heating events and control of overripe wine aromas.

Lauren Hansen, Penley Estate (Coonawarra)

Lauren Hansen is the Winemaker at Penley Estate in Coonawarra. She will be using her Great Wine Capitals Knowledge Exchange Bursary to visit St Emilion in Bordeaux. Lauren will visit and work with winemakers in the region who are specialising in the vinification of Cabernet Franc.

Dr Mary Retallack, Retallack Viticulture

Dr. Mary Retallack is the Viticulturist and Managing Director of Retallack Viticulture Pty Ltd. Mary is using her Great Wine Capitals Knowledge Exchange Bursary to visit Bordeaux, Verona and Lausanne to meet with industry and visit chateaus that specialise in enhancing the biodiversity of their vineyards by using insectary plants, microbat boxes, and predatory bird perches and to learn more about how each demonstrate their environmental stewardship practices. While Mary is in Switzerland, she will also be presenting her recent PhD findings on 'the role of native insectary plants and their capacity to support populations of predatory arthropods for Australian vineyards' at the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV).

Oli Madgett, Platfarm

Oli Madgett is a grower based in McLaren Vale who also runs AgTech Meetups in Adelaide. Oli is using his Great Wine Capitals Knowledge Exchange Bursary to visit San Francisco/Napa Valley to learn about AgTech innovation in the region, and also share with growers in California what's happening in the Australian AgTech ecosystem.

Stuart Mosman, Chalk Hill Wines (McLaren Vale)

Stuart is using his Great Wine Capitals Knowledge Exchange Bursary to visit the Casablanca Valley in Chile and Mendoza in Argentina. He will study cellar doors and tasting rooms and benchmark both regions customer service, identify the best structured tastings and how they are managing their wine clubs and database.
